The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies was established in 1920 and is the oldest academic geography department in the country. The department has many undergraduate modules and postgraduate programmes where students are exposed to a wide range of real-world environmental and geographical issues. Graduates have a diverse skill-set and gain employment in a multitude of different fields.

What are the minimum requirements to study geography?

Geography can be taken as a subject within the BA(Humanities) and BA(Development and Environment) degree programmes. Specific entry requirements for these degrees can be found in the SU yearbooks.

Do I need geography at school to take it at university?

No, you do not. Many of our postgraduate students didn’t take geography at school but fell in love with the subject at university. Approximately 1/3 of our first year class did not take geography as a matric subject.

Careers paths of past students are diverse and include: Researcher, GIS technician, Agricultural land surveyor, Town planner, Social media manager, Environmental Impact Assessment consultant, Governmental environmental management officer, Teacher, Wetland scientist, Disaster risk management, Environmental site officer for construction firm, Drone flight operator, Solid Waste Management consultant, Academic, Project manager, NGO sector.

Is there a BSc option?

Yes, the BSC Earth Science (Geo-environmental stream) allows for a geography major.
