Academic Exchange Programme has been concluded between the Stellenbosch Faculty of Law and the University of Münster Faculty of Law

We are pleased to announce that an Academic Exchange Programme has been concluded between the Stellenbosch Faculty of Law and the University of Münster Faculty of Law. The programme involves the exchange of lecturers as well as an opportunity for the presentation of research and academic collaboration.

In terms of this programme, one or two academic staff members from each side will annually teach one short course at the partner faculty. Such short course will involve teaching, which may be offered as a block course over a period of two to three weeks, as well as assessments. The course may either be part of the formal curricular or co-curricular programme at Stellenbosch or Münster. It is a good opportunity for academic staff to gain international exposure and for students to be taught by international experts on various topics.

Professor Wim de Villiers (Vice Rector, Stellenbosch University) and Professor Nicola Smit (Dean, Stellenbosch Faculty of Law) signed the agreement on 1 June in Stellenbosch while Professor Petra Pohlmann (Dean, University of Münster Faculty of Law) signed the agreement on 22 June in the presence of Professor Richard Stevens (Vice Dean Teaching & Learning, SU Faculty of Law) in Münster. During his visit to Münster, Professor Stevens presented a lecture, ‘Liability within corporate groups’, focusing on recent English and Dutch case law that dealt with the possible liability of Shell as parent company for damages caused by its Nigerian subsidiary. The lecture then dealt with the question whether German and South African law would provide for a cause of action against the parent company.

The aim is that the first exchange and offering of classes under this new agreement will take place in 2023. More information will follow by the end of the year.
