The general aim of the undergraduate courses in the African Languages Department is to develop students’ communication skills in isiXhosa and to provide an introduction to the two broad study fields of literature and linguistics to first and second language learners of isiXhosa.

What is the difference between Basic Xhosa and Xhosa 178?

Basic Xhosa is a one-year course. Only in exceptional cases can this course be acknowledged so that a student can continue to study isiXhosa at second and third year level (214/244 – 318/348). Xhosa 178 leads to second and third year courses (214/ 244 –  318/348).

Is isiXhosa an important module?

Yes, the module covers content that equips students with knowledge, competencies and skills to address issues in career environments where one or more African languages are used in language and communication services, and where intercultural understanding plays an important role to accomplish these services in an effective way.

How can I achieve optimal communication skills in isiXhosa?

You must attend all the lectures and take part in class activities as well as work programmes.
