Antarctic Legacy of South Africa Online Open Access Archive – 1st of its kind.
We are excited about sharing our ideas at the Data Management Workshop organised by us and hosted in collaboration with Julián Kelly of the University of Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia Campus).

Workshop announcement by the Standing Committee for Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR):

1 April 2019 (08:30 – 12:30): Data Management Workshop for SC-HASS

The Standing Committee for Humanities and Social Sciences (SC-HASS) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is having a conference in Ushuaia next April. At Polar2018 in Davos, Switzerland, during the HASSEG business meeting, the subject of data management within HASSEG was again discussed.
The organisers of the Ushuaia conference have made time available for us to have a workshop on data management and how SC-HASS can embrace this to shape the future of this group within preserving our information collected through the years.

Julián Kelly of the University of Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia Campus) made their facilities available at their campus to host this workshop in the morning of 1 April 2019. The University will provide transportation from the campus to the Museum, so there will be no problem for those attending the Polar Museum Network (PMN) Workshop in the afternoon and evening. The Data Management Workshop will run from 08:30 to 12:30, and at 12:30 mini buses will provide transport to the PMN workshop. The University will provide a coffee break for the data management workshop as well. Those attending the PMN workshop will be able to have a quick lunch at one of the many places near the museum before the PMN starts.

Ria Olivier and Ursula Rack are the organisers of this workshop. Please contact them for any questions.

Draft statement and programme
Workshop on data management – 1 April 2019 – University of Tierra del Fuego
The main objectives of the Ushuaia conference are to provide a space for exchanging information about research in Antarctic humanities and social sciences, stimulate and organise research ideas, and develop future collaborations. Therefore, the preserving of our information within this group fits in well with this objective.
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM), within the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), states that:
“Data and information are valuable and irreplaceable resources. Proper management of data and information is not an “add-on” or an additional task; it is a fundamental aspect of modern science.
In the pursuit of various scientific objectives, it is often necessary to use data and information collected by scientists from many countries. SCAR recognizes the critical and essential importance of the stewardship of data and information within national and international programmes and its accessibility to all.”

Until now the focus of data was mainly on the natural sciences, but the need for the humanities and social sciences to preserve their data has become an essential and integral part of research in these disciplines within the SCAR environment.

This one-day workshop will allow participants to get a better idea of what data management entails within the discipline of research data management (RDA) and within SCAR. It will provide participants with information and tools to develop their own data management plan in order to preserve their data and to make it available for research. The following aspects will be discussed:
