You may currently experience some difficulties when accessing material in the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) Digital Repository.
The ALSA team, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University Library and Information Services, is working behind the scenes to improve the repository and provide a better experience for everyone who uses this important record of South Africa’s Antarctic and sub-Antarctic heritage. This is a significant process that includes assessing and cleaning existing data, improving metadata, reviewing our collections, and migrating the repository to new software.
Our goal is to make the archive more FAIR — Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable — while creating a more intuitive and engaging experience for researchers, former expedition members, students, educators and anyone interested in South Africa’s Antarctic legacy.
The current repository remains live during this process, but you may occasionally encounter errors or have difficulty accessing particular records or files. We are doing everything possible to make the transition as smooth as we can, although some temporary disruption may be unavoidable.
Need something urgently?
If you are unable to retrieve material from the repository, please contact us directly:

At the same time, we are working through a backlog of material awaiting digitisation and scanning. We look forward to sharing new and expanded collections once they become available in the new repository.
Thank you for your patience while we preserve, organise and improve access to South Africa’s Antarctic heritage.
We believe the journey will be worth it. See less
