The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) received a prestigious Social Impact (SI) Award at the Stellenbosch University (SU) Social Impact Award Ceremony on Thursday, 23 May 2024, at Die Stal in Stellenbosch.
The SU Social Impact Awards honour the significant contributions of academic and professional administrative support services (PASS) staff, celebrating the enduring relationships built with external stakeholders beyond the university.
The DTTC was recognised in the Team Award category for their contribution for research with a positive impact on participants, communities, children with or at risk of tuberculosis, and the scientific community at large.
Dr Lario Viljoen accepted the award on behalf of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr Leslie van Rooi, Senior Director: Social Impact & Transformation, and Prof Nico Koopman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel, who highlighted the importance of the university’s strategic priorities extending beyond academic settings.
