ELS – Not just another acronym!

Extended Learning Spaces has been the talk of the town in Stellenbosch since the project started last year. This project aims to ensure that all the lecture venues regularly used by staff and students have been set up to allow students to join in virtually or in-person and have the same experience.

The project has had some hiccups as we await hardware from international suppliers. However, we are pleased to say that Academic IT has begun ensuring that classrooms already set up are fully supported. We do this in partnership with the Faculty Computer User Area teams and IT staff.

For lecturers who need assistance the following is available:

  1. Training on the use of the devices and software.
  2. Troubleshooting for errors encountered.
  3. Real time virtual or in-person support.

New multi-language feature implemented on REDCap

A new multi-language management feature was recently implemented on the REDCap platform for researchers. 

With REDCap’s new multi-language management feature, you can create and configure multiple display languages for your projects for surveys, data entry forms, alerts, survey invitations, etc.

You can design data collection instruments and have them be displayed in any language that you have defined and translated so that your survey participants or data entry persons can view the text in their preferred language. This eliminates the need to create multiple instruments or projects to handle multiple languages.

When entering data on a data entry form or survey, your users and participants will be able to choose their language from a drop-down list on the page to easily switch to their preferred language for the text displayed on the page. This feature allows you to translate all text related to the data entry process, both for surveys and for data entry forms.

Even various survey settings and email text can be translated. If you have Project Design/Setup privileges in a project, you will see a link to the Multi-Language Management page on the left-hand menu. All information for this new feature is located there if you wish to learn more.

Connect to WiFi on campus

The Wi-Fi network used to connect to the internet access is called eduRoam. Here we explain what it is, how to register and why it is necessary.

What is eduRoam?

eduRoam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduRoam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.

To connect to eduRoam and start using Wi-Fi on campus follow these steps.

Why is MFA essential?

Security risks and innovative cyber criminals are nothing new, however, when we work from home, these risks increase expeditiously. The only way we can combat security breaches is by adding extra measures of which multi-factor authentication (MFA) is one.

If you haven’t, we ask that you urgently do so as all users will require to use MFA to access some services. The first services that will need MFA authentication are the Microsoft365 applications. These include Outlook and Teams.

WHAT IS MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (MFA)?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) seeks to decrease the likelihood that others can access your data.  

Specifically, it enhances the security of your UserID by using your phone, tablet or other device to verify your identity when you attempt to access Stellenbosch University’s network and resources.  

It takes two items to access and update your information: “something you know” (e.g. your password) and “something you have” (e.g. your phone). For example, when you visit an ATM, one authentication factor is the ATM card you use to start the transaction – that’s the “something you have.” Next, you enter a PIN, which is the “something you know.” Without both these factors, your authentication will fail.  

WHY DO I NEED TO USE MFA?

Imagine you work on the University’s financial system. You click on what seems to be a legitimate email, typing in your username and password. A criminal now has your login details and can access everything you can access – including, potentially, bank details. In this way HR systems can be accessed and hacked preventing salaries from being paid paid out, etc. The possibilities are endless if someone has usernames and passwords. 

We must take steps to ensure that we are more than just a single click away from having our pay check stolen or becoming a victim of identity theft.
