ALSA wants to archive your photos

The first and main aim of our project is to preserve South Africa’s rich involvement in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. In order to fulfil this never-ending task we collect and store the stories, memories, photographs and other documents pertaining to South Africans in the Antarctic and on the sub-Antarctic islands since the turn of the previous century (see more details about the ALSA Archive).

Up to now we have been collecting material mostly up to the year 2000, thus we are especially looking for photos (focusing on the human stories behind these expeditions/take-overs) taken from the year 2000 onwards.

Preserve your most precious memories for the future generations of South Africa by following the steps below. The material is also used in publications, national and international conference presentations and in outreach presentations and videos.

Steps

  1. Decide which photos could form part of the ALSA open-access database.
  2. Complete the details of each photo (see example below, if needed a template could also be sent to you) in an Excel/Word table. Rename file accordingly – Photos_NameSurname (e.g. Photos_AncheLouw).
  3. Upload this file and your photos on Google Dive or Dropbox.
  4. Please send the link to these photos and detail sheet to: antarcticlegacy@sun.ac.za
