Correspondence from a member of the 3rd Biological expedition to Marion Island (29th Marion Overwintering Team, 1972 to 1973) with Johan Grobbelaar, Valdon Smith and Anthony de Villiers.
Dane Gerneke a member to this expedition made contact with us. Via the worldwide web, Dropbox and zip files, we were able to get his images.
These images have been digitised, described by him, together with exact dates as when these photographs were taken and added to a catalogue.
Included here just a few images that is now available in the Marion Island photo collection. Look at his collection and see his information to these images in the metadata added to the images. Click here to view Dane Gerneke’s photo collection.
Dane wrote the following in an email: “I still have my compete collection and catalogued them at the time. The search for the catalogue took a while but now having located it I have selected a number of slides of people and activities. We also visited Prince Edward Island at the end of our time there. You have done a wonderful service by collecting & archiving the heritage of SA in the sub-Antarctic islands & Antarctica.”
ALSA would like to thank Dane, who is currently living in Auckland New Zealand, for his contribution towards the ALSA archive as we know how important it is to preserve our Polar heritage.
