Winners: 2014 Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition

The Faculty congratulates Ms Sarah Vahed (LLM winner) and Ms Tamrynne Barnes (LLB runner up) for their sterling achievements in the 2014 Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition.

Ms Vahed completed her LLM in 2014 and submitted her winning essay on “Protecting the child in a Pluralist State: Assessing the practice of Ukuthwala in South Africa”.  Ms Vahed has also been invited to present her thoughts on this topic at a conference entitled  ‘Children, not wives: Ending the scourge of child marriage in Africa’ in Lusaka, Zambia hosted by the Centre for Human Rights (University of Pretoria) later this year.

Ms Barnes completed her LLB degree in 2014 and submitted her essay on “Consumer Protection through Organic Food Labelling: A comparison between South Africa and the European Union”.

Ms Vahed was supervised by Mrs Lize Mills (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Private Law) and co-supervised by Mrs Ebrezia Johnson (Lecturer in the Department of Private Law) and Ms Barnes was supervised by Mrs Lize Mills.
