Trip of a Lifetime : Amangile Sukwana

Amangile Sukwana, was born in a small rural town of Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape and matriculated at Kayamandi High School (Stellenbosch) December 2007. After school he went on to study at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT – Cape Town) and graduated in Btech Internal Auditing. He is currently employed by the National Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) as the SPAO: Asset Management for the Department. Amangile finds his job “very exciting” as he get to interact with different people within the Department as well as stakeholders  from the Private Sector.

 

 

 

Once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica

Amangile Sukwana was part of the DEFF team that was responsible for the Take-Over 2019/2020 at the South Africa Antarctic Station (SANAE IV) and on the journey down South on the S. A Agulhas II. His main job at SANAE IV was to verify the existence of Assets and to comment on the conditions of Assets that included transport vehicles. He wrote an extensive report to all Senior Managers on what transpired on the trip, and also made recommendations for future trips.

                           Amangile “would like to thank all my Managers for affording me this once in a Lifetime opportunity, considering the fact that not everybody goes to such a place.Antarctica is such a peaceful place with no waste dumping, fresh air and luckily we went there during Summer and we didn’t have any hour of Darkness.”

Amangile contact the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa and let them know that he took a few photos on his trip. As Amangile now forms part of South Africa’s legacy of Antarctica, these images will be made available on the digital  repository and future generations will be able to see his involvement within the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP). He would like to encourage students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to see where your efforts can take you and that you do not have to be a Scientist, Engineer, or a Meteorologist to be part of such expeditions.
