For more than 40 years, Prof David Richardson at the Centre for Invasion Biology at Stellenbosch University, showed how non-native trees originally introduced for forestry and farming purposes have spread far beyond their intended use, now threatening biodiversity, using up scarce water, and altering natural ecosystems. Managing these invasions is a complex problem, but South Africa remains a global leader in finding practical, science-based solutions to tackle invasive non-native trees.
